VLC (trước đây mang tên VideoLAN Client) là trình xem phim
nghe nhạc đa phương tiên, đa hệ điều hành, chạy không cần cài đặt, hỗ
trợ nhiều định dạng phim và nhạc (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3,
Ogg, OGM, MOV, wma, wmv...) cũng như DVD, VCD, cùng nhiều vô số các giao
thức truyền phát đa dạng.

Dự án VideoLAN nhắm đến việc truyền phát các nội dung đa
phương tiện MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 và DivX, DVD, các kênh vệ tinh số,
các kênh truyền hình mặt đất số cùng các phim phim phát trục tiếp trên
các mạng IPv4 hay IPv6 băng thông rộng hoặc đa truyền phát trên nhiều hệ
điều hành.

VideoLAN cũng cung cấp một trình chơi đa phương tiện đa hệ
điều hành, VLC, có thể được dùng để đọc luồng truyền phát từ mạng hay
phát phim ngay trên máy. Chương trình hỗ trợ mọi hệ thống GNU/Linux,
BSD, Windows, Mac OS X, BeOS, Solaris, QNX, Familiar Linux...

Changes in VLC (VideoLAN Client) 1.1.0:

• Important changes for packagers:

The module cache has moved to ${libdir}/vlc/. The module cache can now
be generated at install time except if you use staged installation. In
the later case, you can generate the module cache in your post-inst
script by invoking 'vlc-cache-gen'. If the module cache is not present
and vlc can't write in ${libdir}/vlc/, it will result it vlc taking a
long time to launch each time.
- Most X11-related plugins now use XCB instead of Xlib. VLC now uses
- xproto,
- xcb, xcb-shm, xcb-xv, xcb-randr (from libxcb),

- x11-xcb (from libx11) - only for GLX support.
